Thor & Captain America Concept Art

by ilango on Jun.03, 2010, under Comics, Film

I was always a little bit skeptical about the Captain America movie based purely on the superhero’s costume. I mean, lets face it, if you’ve seen the Matt Salinger Captain America movie, you know how ridiculous swash buckler boots look. These images look realistic and the costume concept seems to be based more on the Ultiamtes version of Cap, but I have a feeling we’ll see “Stars and Stripes” at one point in this movie. Cant’t wait to see some Red Skull concept art!

As for Thor, what makes these images interesting is the fact that it’s the first time we’ve seen movie Thor holding the legendary hammer Mjolnir.

DC Animated Projects Canceled

by ilango on Apr.28, 2010, under Comics, Film

Apparently, the excellent Green Lantern: First Flight and Wonder Woman DC Universe movies sold so poorly that sequels for both were canceled, along with… well, pretty much everything else, according to Bruce Timm. That includes an unannounced Aquaman , Batgirl: Year One and Teen Titans: Judas Contract movie, all of which, if they were even half as good as GL and WW, would have been great. Oh, and for kicks Timm says he won’t be making movies of either Batman: Hush or The Long Halloween either, just so you know. I have no idea what this leaves other than the Batman: Under the Red Hood movie, if anything.

Idris Elba Talks Briefly About Heimdall In Thor

by ilango on Apr.12, 2010, under Comics, Film

Idris Elba (The Wire, The Office, The Losers) answered a few of questions regarding his role as The Bifröst Bridge Gaurdian, Heimdall in the upcoming Thor movie.

How is your Roque different from the comic book?

Elba: Roque in the comic book is white and I’m black.

I didn’t even know that.

Elba: Yeah, I didn’t know either but it didn’t matter. There was no reflection on that in the screenplay but I definitely used Roque in the comic book as my skeleton to build my Roque. So I stayed as true as I could to him. The scar was the only physical attribute that I took from the comic book and applied to myself. Other than that, I just used his personality, his persona in the comic book to make my Roque.

Is this a recent development that you can make a change like that?

Elba: Yeah, casting now is taking definitely a more open-eyed approach to it. I was cast in Thor and I’m cast as a Nordic god. If you know anything about the Nords, they don’t look like me but there you go. I think that’s a sign of the times for the future. I think we will see multi-level casting. I think we will see that and I think that’s good.

With Thor do you look at the comic books or Nordic mythology?

Elba: I looked at the comic books actually because Heimdall, he’s a very central character and I wanted to reflect him as he is in the comic books.

What do you look like in Thor?

Elba: [Laughs] I look like how he’s designed, man. I can’t say but he looks phenomenal.

Do you get to do any cool action in that?

Elba: Yeah, I do, yeah. I can’t say, brother, but it’s really, really cool.

The 5 Best (and 5 Worst) Marvel Characters at What They Do

by ilango on Apr.06, 2010, under Comics

“I’m the best at what I do and what I do ain’t very nice” says Wolverine at almost every opportunity. While unclear on what he actually does, this mission statement is abundantly clear that Wolverine is the best at it, whatever it might be. Since being a superhero should probably be considered “very nice” — I mean, it involves beating bad guys but also rescuing people, thwarting evil, et cetera — we can technically rule that out.

Many Marvel heroes aren’t just defined by their superhero status or their powers; they’ve also got other interests and aspects of their personality that define them far more than their costumes. For instance, Nightcrawler is a teleporting mutant and member of the X-Men, but he is also a priest. Maybe. Actually, that’s kind of a confusing subject. But the point is, many of the Marvel superheroes have jobs outside of their duties as superhumans — some of whom are good at them, some of whom aren’t. So this list is a look at who you might want to hire and who you should stay away from if you suddenly ended up running a temp agency in the Marvel Universe.

Iron Man 2 Viral: Stark Expo 2010 Website Launched

by ilango on Mar.30, 2010, under Comics, Film

As you’ve probably read, part of the storyline of Iron Man 2 involves Tony Stark’s attempt to bring back Stark Expo, a world fair-like industrial and scientific exhibition which his father, Howard Stark, first launched in the 1960’s. The mystery of the 1974 Stark Expo is a centerpiece of the new film. As part of the viral marketing for Iron man 2, Marvel Entertainment has launched a website for Stark Expo 2010 at starkexpo2010.com.

The new site features almost 20 images of the fairgrounds/exhibition, an interactive map of the expo, along with videos, one of which includes Tony’s father Howard Stark (played by John Slattery). I’ve included the images after the jump. You will definitely recognize a bunch of these locations from the trailers. A lot of great art design from the making of these sequences is featured on the site. You’ll have to go to the website to explore the videos.

The website also features a countdown, only 38 more days until the 2010 Stark Expo takes place in Flushing Meadows, New York, the same location of both the real world 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair and the 1939/1940 New York World’s Fairs. I doubt any Iron Man viral event will really take place in Queens New York on that date, but the site promises that tickets will be “available soon”.  May 7th 2010 is the date of the film release, and the date of the expo. Take a look around, did we miss anything?

Mark Miller’s Nemesis #1

by ilango on Mar.21, 2010, under Comics

When I first got into comics, I used to love the “What if” series; it would always explore the road not travelled and somehow resolve itself in less than 18 pages. The series has long been cancelled and now is reduced to a series of one-shots.
Well guess who’s back? The team that brought us fanboy favorite “Old Man Logan” and “Civil War” have returned to answer the question, What if “Batman” was the Joker? After being pushed back a couple of weeks, this New Comic Wednesday (March 23, 2010), Nemesis #1 will hit stands for a low a price of $2.99. As Master P would say; make sure you pick up two copies, one for home and one for the…. variant cover!
